What We Look For in the Best Fertility Tests for Women

To find the best fertility tests, it was important that each kit met our specific criteria. Here’s what we looked for during testing and reviewing:

  • Relevance: A fertility test should actually screen for the hormones you need to know about, especially FSH and luteinizing hormones.
  • Quality report: Some of the kits we reviewed simply didn’t offer high-quality reports and it’s important that you can actually understand your results and you know what to do next.
  • Time to results: You shouldn’t be waiting weeks on end to get your report, so we only picked tests that can turnaround your results quickly.
  • Added extras: We found plenty of kits that offer bonuses like free phone calls with physicians to discuss your results and bundle kits that screen for more than just the standard fertility hormones.

1. LetsGetChecked – In-Depth Results & On-Hand Support

  • A choice of three fertility tests
  • Free consultation with a nurse to discuss your results
  • Results available from your health dashboard in 5 days
  • Subscription option for regular testing and cost savings

Price from$69.00
Our score9

LetsGetChecked is our top choice. It has a few different fertility tests, including a progesterone kit, an ovarian reserve test, and an all-in-one female hormone test.

The female hormone test is comprehensive, looking at four key biomarkers that affect your fertility. This includes follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and oestradiol.

Our kit included everything you need to take your sample alongside a detailed set of instructions. It only requires a quick finger-prick blood test which is painless and over in seconds. When you’re done, return the kit using the pre-paid envelope.

We received an email to let us know when the results were ready. It says it takes 5 days on the website, but ours were done in 4 days.

You can access your results from your dashboard, which shows you which biomarkers were tested. We liked that it not only tells you the level of each hormone in your blood, but whether your results sit inside or outside of the normal range.

From your dashboard, you can also arrange a consultation with a nurse which is free. They’re able to talk you through your results and offer you advice on what to do next, which we found very helpful.

LetsGetChecked also offers a subscription option, so it’s great for ongoing fertility testing. This actually helps you save up to 30% in price. It accepted our test taker’s HSA card, too.

2. Everlywell – Comprehensive Fertility Test Covering Testosterone

  • Assesses TSH and testosterone alongside other fertility hormones
  • Detailed report with advice on what your hormone levels mean
  • Subscription options for regular fertility testing ever 3, 6, or 12 months
  • Results only take a couple of days

Price from$49.00
Our score8.5

Everlywell’s female fertility tests offer something a little bit different from others we’ve tested.

The fertility test measures five hormones that affect ovarian reserve, which includes FSH, LH, prolactin, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and testosterone. Not all fertility tests assess TSH and testosterone, so it’s a good choice for getting some extra information about your hormone levels and their impact on your menstrual cycle.

You also have the option to buy a separate ovarian reserve test, as well as pre-menopause and post-menopause kits.

As we expected, the kit requires a finger-prick blood sample. It came with free shipping both ways, which we liked.

Your results are ready quickly, too. We only had to wait 2 days to get the report and it’s quite detailed. Your report shows you the biomarkers tested, your exact levels, and how they compare to normal ranges.

Alongside that, you get detailed information about what your results actually mean for your health and how they affect you. This is great for helping you know what to do next. We also liked the links to further reading resources.

While you don’t get a phone call with a nurse, their customer support channel is very responsive to any questions you may have. We received a response in under an hour.

Everlywell offers subscriptions, so you can get fertility tests delivered to your door every 3, 6, or 12 months. You can pay for your kit with an FSA/HSA card, too.

3. MyLAB Box – Measures 10 Fertility Hormones

  • Choice of fertility tests with a 10-panel kit available
  • Assesses thyroid hormones as well as common fertility hormones
  • Results take 2-5 days
  • Printable report designed for you to take to your doctor

Price from$59.00
Our score7

MyLAB Box has a huge choice of family planning and fertility kits. The Women’s Health test is the most detailed. While it’s more expensive than some other options, it is very comprehensive, screening for 10 key hormones.

Alongside the typical fertility hormones like FSH, estradiol, and LH, the test also tests hormones like cortisol, progesterone, and TSH. It actually analyzes T3 and T4, too, which are key hormones affecting thyroid function, so essentially you get a fertility and thyroid test in one.

If you don’t fancy the 10-panel test, you can buy separate kits for ovarian reserve, postmenopause, and perimenopause. We also found an ovarian confirmation test, which tests whether you are releasing eggs, not just whether you have them.

We were impressed with the quick shipping as it only took a couple of days to get our kit in the mail. You have to provide both a finger-prick blood sample and a saliva swab, so it’s perhaps more fiddly than others but it still only takes a few minutes.

Results typically take 2-5 days from when your sample arrives at the lab. Your report shows you your levels, and there is detailed information on the website to help you interpret these.

During testing, we found that you can download a PDF version of your results which is a good idea if you need to take them to your doctor.

While MyLAB Box does offer free consultations with nurses and prescription services, this is only for STDs, so it’s not available with any of the fertility kits.

4. Health Testing Centers – Combines STD & Fertility Testing

  • Two fertility tests available with STD screening included
  • Same-day testing available in Health Testing Centers’ labs
  • Free phone call with a nurse if you test positive for an STD
  • Results in 4-10 business days

Price from$49.00
Our score6

Health Testing Centers has two fertility kits – a basic package and an expanded kit. As you’d expect, the basic kit screens for the essential fertility hormones like FSH and LH, alongside thyroid function.

The expanded kit, however, also contains STD testing. It screens for seven STDs that can affect your fertility, including chlamydia, HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis, so it’s a good option for combining STD and fertility testing.

With Health Testing Centers, you can actually get tested on the same day that you buy your kit. The only downside is that you don’t take the test in your own home. You have to visit a lab testing center to provide your sample.

All of Health Testing Centers labs are CLIA-certified and have a team of qualified physicians available. To take the test, we had to print our laboratory note, hand it in, and that was it. There are no extra forms to fill in and it only takes a few minutes to get your sample.

The majority of Health Testing Centers’ results are ready in just a couple of days, with some taking less than 24 hours. We noticed that the fertility tests take longer, though, with 4-10 business days to wait.

We didn’t think our report was very detailed. It shows you your levels, but it’s quite scientific and not that easy to understand. That said, if you know what numbers you’re looking for and how to interpret values, it’s just fine.

If you test positive for an STD as part of the fertility test, you’re entitled to a free call with a physician. They can advise you on what to do next and even give you a prescription, but this is at their own discretion.

5. Verisana – Fertility, Menopause & Menstruation Kit

  • Fertility test assesses five key hormones
  • Free shipping to your home
  • Requires a saliva sample rather than a blood test
  • Results take 2-3 weeks

Price from$149.95
Our score

Versiana’s female hormone check analyzes progesterone, estradiol, cortisol, testosterone, and DHEA. It’s designed to assess fertility, menstruation, and those approaching menopause, so it covers all bases.

Unlike many of the other kits on this list, it only requires three saliva samples, so there’s no blood involved. Your results do take much longer though and you might be waiting up to 3 weeks.

Your report is emailed to you in PDF format, explaining your hormone levels and where they sit on the scale. This is color-coded in red, yellow, and green so you can identify anything concerning. It tells you what normal reference ranges look like, too.

We were pleased to see that your report gives you a detailed explanation of each hormone and the effects it has on the body.

While you don’t get any advice on your next steps, it gives a good overview of what your results mean. With a three-week wait, we expected a little more, but it’s fine for the basics.

6. Modern Fertility – Fertility Screening with Extra Insights

  • Choice of three fertility tests, including pregnancy kit
  • Detailed report with personalized advice on your hormone levels
  • Ovulation app that integrates with your results
  • Free phone call with fertility nurse to discuss your report

Price from$159.00
Our score

You have the choice of three different fertility tests with Modern Fertility. There’s an all-in-one (and more expensive) kit, an ovulation test, and a pregnancy test.

The fertility hormone test assesses seven hormones, including the usual ones you’d expect. But it also screens for prolactin and free thyroxine, so you get insight into your thyroid function and milk production, too.

We really liked the detail of the report. In a few days, you get a detailed overview of all your hormone levels, how they compare to normal ranges, and advice for you tailored to your results. You also get some cool insights like whether you’re predisposed to early menopause.

Modern Fertility offers an ovulation app that you can to accurately identify the two days you’re most likely to get pregnant. This integrates with your results to give you personalized predictions based on your hormone levels.

With your test, you get a free one-on-one call with a fertility nurse. You also get access to the Modern Community, where you can ask questions and have them answered by fertility experts.

What’s in the Fine Print?

Sometimes there are hidden fees that you might not be aware of when purchasing your kit.

Thankfully, all of the tests on this list offer free shipping, which means you pay nothing to get your kit to your home or return it to the lab, either. The only exception is Health Testing Centers because you have to take the test in one of their labs rather than at home.

The companies that offer follow-up consultations with physicians or nurses all do so free of charge. We checked it out and made sure the actual number you dial is free, too.

You can also get a prescription service with Health Testing Centers, at their nurses’ discretion. The prescription given to you is free, but you still have to pay for the actual treatment.

Both Everlywell and LetsGetChecked offer subscription services where you can get regular tests delivered to your door every 3, 6, or 12 months. It means you save money overall, but remember that there are obviously ongoing charges depending on the timeframe you choose.

How Accurate Are Fertility Tests?

You might be surprised to learn that at-home fertility tests are very accurate. In fact, most companies use the exact same laboratory that your doctor would use to get your results.

We made sure to only pick the most accurate tests. All of the kits on this list offer at least 95% accuracy, leaving only very small room for error.

No test offers 100% accuracy. And it’s important to remember that there are other factors that can affect the reliability of your test, such as whether you follow the instructions correctly when providing your sample.

What Will the Results From a Fertility DNA Test Tell Me?

A fertility test gives you an insight into the various hormones that can affect your fertility, such as FSH, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and oestradiol. Your results show you your levels and usually how these compare to average levels, so you can identify any concerns.

Some fertility tests also look at other biomarkers like progesterone and anti-mullerian hormone, to assess ovarian reserve and production, which gives you a good indicator of your fertility levels.

Most results advise you of what your levels mean and how they can affect your body. With some tests, you receive a follow-up call with a physician to talk you through your results and tell you what to do next.

How do Our Top Picks Compete on Price?

LetsGetChecked offers the best value for money on this list at $129 for the fertility kit. It tests the four key hormones, comes with a detailed report, quick results, actionable advice, and free follow-up support.

Everlywell only costs you $20 more than LetsGetChecked, and screens for a couple of extra hormones. For the higher fee, your results include information on your testosterone levels and thyroid-stimulating hormone, but you don’t get a physician phone call.

MyLAB Box also costs $149 for the standard fertility test. Or, you could upgrade and get the all-in-one fertility and hormone test for $229. It seems expensive, but it’s actually very good value for money as it reports on your thyroid function, fertility levels, progesterone, and even cortisol.

Health Testing Centers is the cheapest of them all because you can buy individual tests for various fertility hormones, starting at $49. The bundle kits are very expensive, though, costing upwards of $350.

Which is the Best Fertility Test for Women?

My top choice is LetsGetChecked because the report was the most detailed of any fertility kit we tested and the free follow-up support is a huge plus. It also screens for all the need-to-know hormones in one budget-friendly kit.

You might go for Everlywell if you’re interested in your testosterone or TSH levels as part of fertility testing.

Or try MyLAB Box if you want full thyroid function screening, as it covers everything to do with your thyroid and fertility in one test. Plus it looks at cortisol and progesterone, which you often have to pay separately for.

FAQs

How do I take a women’s fertility test at home?

Taking a fertility test at home is really easy. It usually involves a quick, finger-prick blood sample that you take yourself. Sometimes it requires a saliva swab, too.

Your kit will come with all the equipment you need and detailed instructions to make sure you take your sample correctly.

How do companies test women’s fertility?

DNA tests screen for hormones that can affect your fertility levels, including egg production and reserve. These hormones are usually FSH, luteinizing hormone, prolactin, and oestradiol.

Companies assess the levels of each of these hormones in your blood to tell you whether they are high, medium, or low, so you can identify any concerns. Some kits also analyze biomarkers like progesterone and TSH, which can also influence your fertility and likelihood of early menopause.

How much does a female fertility test cost?

Fertility testing at home is very budget-friendly, as long as you choose a high-quality test like LetsGetChecked.

At-home fertility tests typically range between $100-$200 for bundle options that include screening for several hormones in one kit. You can also buy kits individually from some DNA testing companies that only screen for one or two hormones, which can be as little as $50.

Does insurance cover female fertility tests at home?

Fertility tests are usually covered by insurance, but it’s often only the case if you get tested through your doctor. At-home tests might not be covered, but it’s always worth checking your individual policy first.

Remember that a lot of companies, such as LetsGetChecked, accept HSA/FSA cards, so you can still cut the cost of your test that way, even if your insurance won’t pay out.
