What is STD Testing?

STD testing is a type of screening that tests for sexually transmitted infections. They typically involve either a urine or blood sample, or a swab (cheek, vaginal, or anal), depending on the disease you’re testing for.

STD kits can test for multiple infections at once or just one kind. The most common diseases tested for include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, HIV, Hepatitis, Syphilis, and Trichomoniasis.

It’s important to remember that even if you’re not sexually active right now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get tested. You can still carry STDs even if you don’t have any visible symptoms.

You can choose to get tested at your doctors or by taking an at-home, online STD test. Online STD testing means you can skip the doctor’s office and take the test in your home, privately. Your results are usually available on a secure online dashboard in a matter of days.

Our Best At-Home STD Testing Kits Reviewed

  • HIPAA-compliant testing and reporting for dependable results

MyLabBox is our top choice of at-home STD tests with its mail-in kits for males and females. The most popular choice is the Uber Box which tests for eight common STDs, including HIV, Hepatitis C, Herpes, and Chlamydia.

The Uber Box offers good value for money based on the cost per test and it covers you for the eight most common STDs. It’s worth bearing in mind that the Total Box tests for 14 STDs and only costs you around $100 more, still giving you great value per test and checking you for a wider number of conditions. You also get an optional HPV test with the Total Box.

Both the male and female kits test for similar STDs, but the collection methods are different. For males, it’s a blood and urine sample, but the female kit requires a vaginal swab and blood sample.

  • Tests for Hepatitis A, B, and C as well as all other common STDs
  • Same-day testing available
  • Easy-to-interpret results sent discreetly to your email
  • Results in 1-2 days

STDcheck.com offers an all-in-one 10-panel test that screens for all major STDs, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Herpes, Syphilis, and more.

It’s actually one of the few kits that test for Hepatitis A, B, and C in its complete package, and it won’t cost you an arm and a leg either. You can also choose the HIV Early Detection Test but this costs more.

NOTE: With STDcheck, you cannot get tested at home. You order and pay for the test at home, but you have to select a nearby clinic and attend an appointment to take your test. Your kit is not delivered to your home.

You can take the STD test on the same day you ordered it if your chosen clinic has an available slot. This is great news if you’re concerned and in a hurry. There are plenty of clinics to choose from, with over 4,500 testing centers across the US. And you can use their Find a Center tool to choose where you want to get tested. Even though you have to visit a clinic, the process is still discreet, with no extra paperwork or details required.

4. Everlywell – Best for Ongoing STD Testing

  • Test for individual STDs or choose bundles to screen for Chlamydia, Herpes, Syphilis, and more
  • Subscriptions available for ongoing, cheap STD testing
  • Discreet packaging and testing
  • Results within 5 days

Everlywell offers individual STD tests that are priced very low in comparison to others. These are a good idea if you need cheap STD testing and are concerned about a specific STD.

You can also choose either the female or male STD test for the complete package. This looks for seven different STDs and is obviously more expensive. It’s not too steep, but most other services offer a 10-in-one test for the same price.

You have the option of a monthly, quarterly or semi-annual subscription for ongoing STD testing – this helps you save dollars, too.

When it comes to privacy, though, Everlywell has you covered. Its tests arrive in plain packaging and your results stay anonymous, even when they enter the lab. This means the lab doesn’t know who you are while they’re analyzing your results.

Your at-home kit involves a finger prick and either a vaginal swab or urine sample. Return shipping is free. Your results are reviewed by a qualified physician for complete accuracy.

It only takes a couple of days to get your results. The online dashboard shows whether you’ve tested positive, and you can view personalized recommendations so you know what to do next. You can also speak to a physician to discuss your positive result.

5. HealthLabs – Best For Early HIV Testing

  • Comprehensive testing that includes all common STDs and Early HIV Testing
  • CLIA-Certified testing labs
  • Confidential and secure results
  • Results in 24-72 hours

HealthLabs has a huge variety of STD tests that look for all common STDs, as well as early HIV detection.

The most comprehensive test screens for 11 STDs, including HIV Type 1 and 2 and early screening – it can detect HIV in your blood before your body has even triggered an immune response. This level of testing doesn’t come cheap, though. It’s the most expensive STD test I’ve seen.

Your test involves providing a urine and blood sample in one of HealthLab’s CLIA-Certified testing centers. So although you order the test from your home, you need to visit a lab to take it. It’s highly confidential, though, and no one else knows what you’re visiting the lab for.

You can expect your results usually within 24-72 hours, even with the Ultimate STD Panel test. They’re uploaded to your secure online portal, which is completely private to you.

6. Health Testing Centers – Best For Non-Urgent STD Testing

  • Choose bundle kits or individual tests that screen for Chlamydia, Herpes, Syphilis, Trichomoniasis, and more
  • Test kit delivered to your door in 5-7 business days
  • Cancel and receive a refund if you change your mind
  • Results in 1-2 business days

Health Testing Centers has a variety of STD kit bundles and individual tests, so you can find one that suits you best. The Total STD kit is pretty expensive, but it screens for 10 common STDs for the most comprehensive results.

Your at-home kit arrives discreetly in the post within 5-7 business days. It’s not the quickest of deliveries, so perhaps consider another kit if you need testing urgently. Your actual results only take 1-2 business days, though, so it’s a quick turnaround. There’s free shipping, too.

Results are completely confidential, and nothing is stored on your medical records or shared with your healthcare provider.

If you change your mind and don’t want to send your kit to the lab, you can cancel your test. You get a refund, minus the cost of shipping.

7. 247LabKit – Best For Pregnancy and STD Testing Combined

  • Screens for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, HIV, Syphilis, and more, including a pregnancy test
  • Three kits available for all budgets and concerns
  • 100% lab-certified and results reviewed by physicians specializing in STD testing
  • Results in 2-3 days

247LabKit offers basic, standard, and comprehensive kits. The basic test is one of the cheaper at-home STD kits, but it only screens for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea.

It tests for pregnancy alongside eight common STDs. This includes Chlamydia, HIV, Syphilis, and others, though Mycoplasma and HPV aren’t included. That said, I’ve not seen another STD kit that has pregnancy testing included.

Once ordered, your kit is delivered in the post to your home, usually arriving within two days. You only need to send a urine sample and cheek swab, so there’s no finger-pricking required.

Your results are fully reviewed by physicians that specialize in STD testing, which is great news for reliability. After registering your kit online, you can expect to get your results within 2-3 days.

8. Personalabs – Best For On-Hand Support

  • Tests for HIV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Syphilis, and more
  • Online symptoms checker finds your ideal test kit
  • Follow-up support and prescriptions available from a doctor
  • Results in 24 hours

Personalabs offers urine and blood sample STD testing, but the majority of its kits require a blood test. There’s a huge variety to choose from, which includes both bundle kits and individual STD tests. It also means there’s something for every budget.

If you’re not sure which test to choose, use the online symptoms checker. It recommends the best test for you based on your specific symptoms.

You get a doctor’s order once you’ve chosen your test, and you then need to visit a lab to provide your sample.

Within 24 hours, your results are ready to view on your secure online account.

You can speak to one of Personalab’s on-hand doctors after receiving your results, free of charge. They’re able to provide you with a prescription that you can print at home and take to your local pharmacy. You can then have a follow-up consultation to make sure everything’s OK, if you feel like you need one.

How We Tested At-Home STD Testing Kits

To decide on my list of top at home STD kits, I looked for very specific features to make sure your test is private, accurate, and comprehensive.

  • Common STDs – I looked for tests that screen for the most common STDs and offer both bundles and individual tests so you can find the right one for you.
  • Discreet packaging – I made sure only the STD kits with discreet packaging made it on to this list, so no one knows what your package is when it arrives in the mail.
  • CLIA certified and accuracy – I looked for STD kits that have CLIA certified labs that ensure the accuracy of your results, so you know what it says on the paper is actually reliable.
  • Quick results – I compared how quickly each test can give you your results so you can understand your sexual health without waiting too long.
  • Cost – Value for money is important, and I wouldn’t want you overpaying for a poor quality test.

What’s In the Fine Print?

Some STD kits lure you in with a low price, but forget to tell you about extra costs like shipping and follow up support. I examined the fine print of every at-home STD test on this list so there are no hidden surprises.

All of the STD kits on this list offer free shipping both ways, apart from one. Only 247LabKit charges you for delivery to your home, with costs starting from $22.80 up to $71.86 depending on your location and how quickly you need the test delivered. It’s free to return your kit, though.

With many of these services, you also get free support following a positive result. Although the actual support is free, what about the numbers you have to call to speak to a physician? I checked them out for you and all lines are free of charge.

Although 247LabKit charges for shipping, it offers free follow-up support and prescription, unlike STDcheck.com which charges a fee for prescribing treatment and sending it to your local pharmacy.

At-Home STD Testing: Prices Compared

With the majority of these services, what you get is what you pay for, free from hidden costs. Bear in mind, though, while 247LabKit appears to be one of the cheaper options, it quickly gets pricey when you add on shipping costs.

In terms of the 10 STD test panel kits, STDcheck.com and HealthLabs come in the cheapest, at just under $200 each. Everlywell charges around the same price for its female and male kits, which only test for seven STDs. Then there’s Personalabs that charges over $50 more for its kit that tests for 6 common STDs. With this service, though, you do get all the extra support (including prescriptions) included in the fee.

MyLabBox offers the most expensive kit, but it’s worth noting that this is the most comprehensive kit I’ve found, testing for 14 different STDs. LetsGetChecked charges only $20 less for its 10-panel STD kit, and HealthTestingCentres costs the same price as MyLabBox, but also only screens for 10 STDs. So if you’re looking for the full works, it might not be that cost-effective to choose either of these options.

If you’re only looking to test one or two STDs, consider a service that offers these rather than a big bundle. With STDcheck.com, you can choose individual kits from just over $20, which will be a much better investment than paying over $300 for a 10+ STD check when you don’t need or want it.

STD Testing for Men

Some STDs are more common among males than females. Men are most at risk of Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomoniasis, and genital herpes. In fact, Chlamydia is the most common STD in men, with around 578,000 cases reported in the US in 2017.

It’s important to remember that men can display different signs to women when it comes to STDs. Some of the most common symptoms in men include pain and/or swelling in the testicles, itching around the penis, genital warts, pain when urinating, and cloudy, thick, or bloody penile discharge.

The actual STD test for men involves a urine sample and a blood sample, which is slightly different to the collection methods for women, too.

STD Testing for Women

Among women, the most common STD is the HPV virus, which is also the main cause of cervical cancer. Around 40% of women have some form of the HPV virus in the US. The other most at-risk STDs include Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Herpes.

It’s not uncommon for women to experience no symptoms at all, but some of the easiest tell-tale signs are vaginal bleeding outside of the usual cycle, itching around the vagina, vaginal discharge, and pain while having sex. As well as a urine and blood sample, STD tests often require a vaginal swab, too.

How to Talk With My Partner About STD Testing

No matter how comfortable you are with your partner, talking about STDs can still be a bit awkward.

It’s important to get tested for STDs before you become sexually active with your partner. But if you didn’t, that doesn’t mean you can’t both get tested now.

Try opening up a conversation about whether you’ve ever tested your sexual health, what you know about your own sexual health, and why it’s important to find out. That way, you can both get treatment if you need it and lower your chances of giving it to one another.

You could suggest going to get tested together, or ordering an at-home test at the same time, so you can support each other.

Protect Yourself and Your Partner With an STD Check

Types Of STD Testing: Which one is the right for you?

There are loads of at-home STD tests to choose from, and I’ve rounded up the best ones for you here. But how do you know which is right for you?

If you’re looking for an STD test that’s specific to your gender, MyLabBox might be your best choice. It has male and female kits that check for all the common STDs you’re most at-risk from. It’s also one of the only kits that includes an HPV test for females.

If you have a specific concern, LetsGetChecked has more kits than most, including a Simple 2 kit that screens only for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. It should be your first choice if these are the only two STDs you’re worried about and don’t want to pay the cost of a full 10+ STD kit. There are also plenty of individual kits that test for one STD.

STDcheck.com screens for Hepatitis A, B, and C alongside all the other common STDs. Most kits only screen for one type of Hepatitis, or not at all, so if you want to test for Hepatitis as well as everything else at the same time, STDcheck is a great option.

If you’re planning on testing your sexual health regularly, Everlywell might be the right test for you. You can subscribe to individual tests or bundle kits which are delivered to your door every month, three months, or six months.

What will the results tell me?

Your results tell you whether you have any of the STDs you’ve tested for. These are usually just displayed as a positive or negative result on your secure online dashboard.

When you’ve taken your sample and posted it to the lab, it can take anywhere between 1-5 days to get your STD results. Usually, most STD tests also offer a follow-up service where you can speak to a physician about your results and find out what your next steps are.

Private Sexual Health Testing

STD testing at home is the solution to finding the answers you need about your sexual health, without the awkward and invasive testing you’d get in the doctors.

With an at-home STD test, you can see whether you have any STDs by taking a test in the comfort of your own home. Simply provide a sample, then wait for an accurate result in just a few days. Even if you don’t think you’ve got something, it’s always good to routinely check on your sexual health, and at-home kits make it even easier.

Any of the 10 kits in this list offer great value for money and accurate, private testing. The best at-home STD test? I’d have to say MyLabBox, since it’s quick, comprehensive, and truly reliable. Plus the kits won’t break the bank either.

FAQs

How much does STD testing cost?

The cost of an STD test mostly depends on the number of STDs you’re testing for. They also vary by provider.

You can pay anything in the range of $24 (for an individual test) to upwards of $300 for an all-in-one test that screens for 10+ STDs.

If you only want to test for one kind of STD, you might be better choosing an individual test, though the more expensive tests give you more comprehensive results. They also screen for other STDs that justify the expense, like early HIV detection and HPV.

Does insurance cover STD testing?

Your insurance provider usually covers STD testing, but only if it’s in a doctor’s clinic or laboratory. It’s unlikely that your insurance covers the cost of at-home STD testing. However, at-home kits (especially those in this review) are usually affordable, so you won’t have to pay out too much. Plus, you get more privacy that way, too.

What STD can be detected by blood test?

A blood test is used to detect HIV, Hepatitis A, B, and C, Herpes, and Syphilis. If you’re taking an at-home test, you only need to provide a finger-prick blood sample.

Other common STDs, including Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Trichomoniasis require a urine sample. Vaginal or anal swabs may also be required for some STDs, alongside a blood or urine test.

How long does an STD test take?

An at home STD test should only take you between 5-15 minutes, depending on the types and number of samples required.

How long does it take for an STD to show up on a test?

This depends on which STD you’re testing for, and it can range anywhere from one day to seven weeks. Here are the testing window periods for each STD:

  • Chlamydia – 1-5 days
  • Gonorrhea – 2-6 days
  • Hepatitis A – 2-7 weeks
  • Hepatitis B – 6 weeks
  • Hepatitis C – 8-9 weeks
  • HIV – 30-90 days
  • Syphilis – 3-6 weeks
  • Herpes – 3-6 weeks
  • Trichomoniasis – 3-7 days

How soon after unprotected sex can I test for an STD?

Most people would think you should go get tested immediately, but you usually yield a negative result if you do this.

You should wait for the window periods for each STD before taking the test to get the most accurate results. For Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Trichomoniasis you only need to wait a few days, but other STDs require several weeks before you can take a test.

How accurate are STD tests?

STD tests are usually highly accurate, but remember, no test can guarantee 100% accuracy. The reliability of your result depends on a number of factors.

Firstly, whether you’ve taken the test within the window period for an STD. For example, if you took a test for HIV 5 days after having unprotected sex, it’s very unlikely it’ll detect anything, because it takes 30-90 days to show a positive result.

Since you’re taking the test at home, accuracy can also depend on how reliable your sample is. Did you provide enough urine? Did you use the swab as indicated? These all influence your results.

If you follow the instructions and make sure you know the window testing periods, though, you get an accurate result 99% of the time.
