Going to the doctor is always stressful and annoying – but if you need to get tested for syphilis, it can also be embarrassing. You don’t want to risk running into a neighbor or coworker…
We’ve researched and reviewed the best STD kits that offer at-home or discreet in-lab screening, with results ready in just a couple of days.
My top choice is LetsGetChecked because it’s the most comprehensive option and you get personalized support to walk you through your results.

How We Tested the Best Syphilis At-Home Tests
Here’s what I looked for when reviewing and evaluating each kit:
- STD options: I found tests that offer a mix of individual syphilis kits and more comprehensive bundles.
- Privacy: It’s important that your kit is discreet and unidentifiable, especially if it’s being shipped to your home. Every in-lab option also offers confidential testing.
- Price: STD kits shouldn’t cost you your monthly paycheck, so I only chose those that are budget-friendly and worth paying for.
- Time to results: Each kit on this list produces your report in a few days, so you aren’t waiting long for your results.
- Choice of two bundle kits that screen for syphilis and other common STDs
- Discreet, plain packaging
- Free physician support with your results
- Results in 2-5 days
LetsGetChecked offers two bundle kits that screen for syphilis alongside other STDs, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, so it’s great for combining everything in one.
We were impressed with the discreetness of the packaging. There’s no way to tell it’s an STD test when it arrives at your home, which is great for privacy.
Both tests require a urine and finger-prick blood sample. My colleague’s kit came with fully detailed instructions and it only takes a couple of minutes.
Results are really quick, too. LetsGetChecked promises reports in 2-5 days, and we received ours in 3. It’s all accessible from an app, which we really liked.
Your report clearly shows whether syphilis was detected or not with an abnormal or normal result, with some extra information about what your results mean.
What we liked most, however, was the fact you can schedule a free call with a physician from your app to discuss your results. You can also order treatment at no extra cost, but unfortunately not for syphilis.
LetsGetChecked has subscription options so you can test for syphilis every 3, 6, or 12 months and save on cost, too. You can keep track of your repeat tests using the app, with all your results stored in one place.
- Individual syphilis test, plus male and female bundle kits
- Results in a couple of days
- Free support with positive results
- Subscription option for ongoing testing
Everlywell has an individual syphilis kit, so if you just want to screen for that and nothing else, it’s a good option. Or you can buy comprehensive male and female STD kits that look for all common STDs.
The kit arrived with pre-paid return shipping in plain packaging so it’s unidentifiable in the post.
If you go for the syphilis standalone kit, it’s only a finger prick blood spot. But the male and female STD tests require other sampling methods, including swabs. Regardless, it’s really straightforward and easy to do.
Results take a couple of days, which are accessible from your online account. My colleague’s report was clear and easy to understand – it’s also color-coded which makes it easy to identify any concerns.
The report came with some advice on further testing, but you only get free physician support if you test positive. They contact you to discuss your treatment options and offer advice. For normal results, you just get links to further reading.
You have the option to sign up for an Everlywell membership for ongoing testing. You pay a monthly fee of around $25 and can order any kit you like, so you’re not limited to just syphilis tests, but any of the health and wellness ones.
- Individual syphilis test and couples’ box
- Results in 3-5 days
- Free consultation for any positive results
- Free return shipping to the lab
We like myLAB Box because it offers kits that you can’t find elsewhere, which includes a test designed for couples. The Love Box screens for syphilis and seven other common STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, and herpes.
We were able to choose a male and male, female and female, or male and female kit, so there’s something for everyone. The kit came with different sample collection equipment for each person, with detailed instructions.
You can also buy an individual syphilis kit which is much cheaper and screens for just the one STD if that’s all you need. I’d recommend the bundle kits for better value for money, though.
The packaging is unidentifiable in the post and only took a couple of days to arrive. It’s free to return to the lab, too, and the envelope you send your sample back in is also discreet, which we liked.
Results take around 3-5 days, even with the more comprehensive test. We expected the individual syphilis test to turn around results even more quickly, but 5 days isn’t too long to wait.
Your report includes a reactive or non-reactive result. If you test positive, you also get guidance on accessing a free telemedicine consultation with a doctor to discuss your results and possible treatment options.
- Get tested on the same day you buy your kit
- Individual syphilis kit and 10-panel bundle test
- Results in 1-2 days
- Free call with a nurse for positive results
STDcheck.com offers same-day STD testing, but it comes with a slight catch. You can’t take the test at home, but instead must visit one of their labs.
Thankfully, the testing process is very discreet. My colleague booked his appointment at the lab on the same day and was in and out within 15 minutes. He didn’t have to answer any further questions or fill in any forms, so no one knew what he was being tested for other than the nurse.
You have the choice of several different STD tests, too. There is a separate syphilis kit or the 10-panel test that screens for all common STDs alongside syphilis. This also includes hepatitis A, which we haven’t seen with many other STD kits.
You don’t actually have to make an appointment to visit the lab to get tested, but it can help reduce waiting times. Either way, you can go within a few hours of buying your test. This also cuts down results waiting times. My colleague’s report was ready in 1 day.
The report itself isn’t too impressive. It gives you a reactive or non-reactive result, but no further advice or explanation.
You do get a free physician consultation if you test positive, and they can give you a prescription for free that you take to your local chemist. You still have to pay for the treatment itself, though.
- Get tested on the same day, including Saturdays
- Individual syphilis kit and 10-panel test
- Reports ready in 24-72 hours
- Doctor consultations with positive results for an extra fee
All of PrioritySTD’s kits have to be taken at a nearby lab, but it does offer something that not every company does, and that’s weekend testing. You can choose to give your sample on a Saturday, and we were surprised to see that comes at no extra cost.
You can choose between a separate syphilis kit or a more expensive 10-panel test that screens for all types of HIV, herpes, chlamydia, and other common STDs.
The labs are all CLIA-certified and FDA-approved, which means they’re reliable for accuracy and confidentiality. We thought the process went really smoothly. My colleague was only there around half an hour after a quick blood draw.
The results times are also quick, with reports ready in 24-72 hours. We liked that you can access your report from your secure online account on your mobile.
You can get a doctor’s consultation but there’s a fee of $65. It does offer prescriptions and treatment options, but unfortunately, only for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.
- Choice of two syphilis tests that detect all syphilis stages
- In-lab, same-day testing
- Choose to get your results in lab, via email, or on a call
- Results in 24-72 hours
With HealthLabs, you have the choice of two different kits that can detect syphilis across all three stages. The T. Pallidum kit screens for syphilis in the later stages when it’s harder to detect, so if you think you may have had it before, this is a great choice.
There’s a rapid plasma reagin test, which looks for syphilis antibodies. We liked that the report not only shows you whether antibodies were detected but actually how many antibodies you have.
If you prefer a bundle option, there are plenty of other kits on offer. We particularly liked the comprehensive STD panel, which screens for 9 STDs, including early HIV detection, which you usually have to buy separately from other testing companies.
All HealthLabs tests have to be taken in the lab, so it’s perhaps not as discreet as other options. If you’re comfortable visiting the lab, though, it’s very straightforward and you can go without an appointment to provide your sample. You can also get tested on the same day you buy your kit.
One thing we really liked is that you can choose how you receive your results. They can be sent to you via email, you visiting the lab, or you can request a confidential phone call from a physician. Our results typically took 24-72 hours via email, so it’s very speedy.
- Kits to detect syphilis 1-3 weeks after exposure
- Combine syphilis testing and other STD screening with bundle options
- Results in a couple of days
- Choice of in-lab or at-home tests
Health Testing Centers offers both in-lab and at-home testing for syphilis, so you can decide what works best. The in-lab option is cheaper, but only by $10.
You can actually take the syphilis test within 1-3 weeks after exposure, which is much quicker than the typical 3-6 weeks you have to wait with other kits, so it’s a good option for immediate screening.
There are other bundle options if you want to screen for more STDs at the same time, including a complete STD kit that looks for HIV, herpes, chlamydia, and others.
If you choose in-lab testing, you can get tested right away, but the home kits take 5-7 days to arrive, which is quite slow compared to others. They come with easy-to-follow instructions, though, and free return shipping. And the syphilis test only requires a single finger-prick blood spot.
My colleague’s results took a couple of days, with his report sent via email. It’s quite basic, but it clearly shows a negative or positive result. It’s slightly disappointing you don’t get any further advice in your report.
We were expecting follow-up support for any positive results, but unfortunately, this doesn’t cover syphilis tests.
- Video call with physicians to discuss results and offer prescriptions
- Individual syphilis kits and budget-friendly bundle options
- Results take 2-10 business days
- In-lab testing only
Personalab’s offers a telemedicine consultation option alongside all of its tests. You can schedule a 15-minute video call with a nurse who can explain your results, discuss treatment options, and also offer free prescriptions. Although it does charge around $90 for this service, which is on top of the fee you pay for your kit.
The actual STD kits are very cheap, though, with an individual test for syphilis or more comprehensive bundles. There are loads of bundle options on offer that include syphilis, all of which vary in price.
We liked the mini panel because it’s well-priced and screens for urinalysis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea as well as syphillis.
We had to visit one of Personalab’s testing centers to provide a sample, but it was really easy. There are thousands throughout the US so we found one just a couple of minutes away. The whole process took around 15 minutes.
Personalabs is quite slow with results though, with some reports taking up to 10 working days. That’s quite a delay, especially when it comes to STD testing. Most of the time, ours took 6 days. The report is accessible from your online account and we received an email when they were ready to view.
- Choice of three bundle kits that screen for syphilis and other STDs
- Accepts insurance or choose to pay yourself
- Ongoing, unlimited support for an extra fee
- Results take 7 days
Nurx is one of the only options I’ve found that accepts insurance, so you might not actually have to pay anything for your test. There is an upfront cost of $75, but this is then billed to your insurance. You also have the option to just pay for it yourself if you’d rather.
There’s a choice of four bundle kits, but no individual syphilis tests. That does mean you get extra insights with your results though. It screens for many other STDs including chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis, and HIV, so it gives you a well-rounded view of your sexual health.
Your test is shipped to your home. We were impressed with the discreetness of the packaging and the fact it only took a couple of days to arrive. It comes with everything you need to collect your sample, which is usually just a saliva swab.
We had to download the app, too, which asks you some questions about your health and sexual history first. You can track the progress of your results from here. Ours were ready in 7 days, so it’s perhaps not the best for really quick results.
You can pay a fee of $15 to access unlimited support. This means you can speak to their medical team any time you like about your results or anything else, which is a huge plus. If you test positive, a nurse also calls you to discuss your treatment options.
- Rapid detection syphilis test and antibody screening
- Comprehensive bundle option for more STD testing
- Same-day, in-lab testing
- Results in 1 day
Labwork’s syphilis FTA-ABS kit is a highly specific test for syphilis that detects antibodies around 3-4 weeks after exposure, so it can tell if you’ve recently had a syphilis infection. There’s also the standard syphilis kit that you can use for an initial and quick diagnosis of syphilis.
The turnaround time for results is only around 24 hours, so it’s pretty speedy. Our report wasn’t anything impressive, but it’s fine for a quick positive or negative confirmation.
You only have to give a finger-prick blood sample, but you must visit a lab to get tested. You can go without an appointment, but we’d recommend booking one as our colleague was waiting around an hour with no appointment.
If you want to screen for more STDs, there’s also an advanced STD panel that detects HIV, chlamydia, hepatitis, and any other urine findings that might indicate an infection.
Unfortunately, there’s no follow-up support or nurses to walk you through your results even for positive reports, so that’s a little disappointing.
What’s in the Fine Print?
Some STD tests might look cheap but they can come with hidden costs that quickly add up, whether that’s shipping, processing, or support.
All of the kits on this list that offer home shipping do so free of charge. That also includes return shipping, as your kit includes a pre-paid envelope to send your sample back.
A lot of the tests only offer in-lab testing, which is a non-cost-related surprise that you need to be aware of. It’s obviously not quite as private as taking your test at home, but the labs are very confidential and they don’t ask you any questions or make you fill in any more forms.
LetsGetChecked offers free support regardless of your results, though many other companies like STDcheck.com and myLAB Box only offer free support if you test positive.
Others, including Personalabs and Nurx, charge you a fee to access a consultation with a nurse. And these can be quite expensive.
How Accurate Are Home Syphilis Tests?
At-home STD tests are just as accurate as the ones you would take through your doctor. They use the exact same testing labs as you would do with any of the at-home or in-lab options.
With STD testing, there are other factors you need to consider that can affect the reliability of your results, especially incubation periods. For Syphilis, you usually have to wait between 3-6 weeks after being exposed to the virus before taking your test, as it often won’t show up.
The quality of your sample can also affect your results, such as whether you provided enough urine or blood to detect an infection. Always follow the instructions as stated and read up on the incubation periods before taking your test.
What Will the Results From a Home Syphilis Test Tell Me?
Your report will show you a positive or negative result, depending on whether syphilis has been detected in your blood. Sometimes, this can also be reported as reactive (positive) or non-reactive (negative).
If you chose a bundle option, your results will include the same information for other STDs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, herpes, and hepatitis.
How Do Our Top Picks Compete on Price?
STD kits vary in price considerably, depending on how many STDs you’re screening for in one test. LetsGetChecked doesn’t offer any individual kits, but the standard 5 test only costs $149, which is very good value for money. Buying kits individually for each of these would usually work out much more costly. And you get free support for that price.
Everlywell charges $149 for a six-panel test, so you get an extra STD included for the same price as LetsGetChecked. However, you don’t get a free physician consultation.
You can also buy an individual syphilis kit for $49 which is very cheap. Or if you sign up for the monthly subscription service, it only costs you $24.99 a month.
myLAB Box’s individual syphilis kit costs $79, but doesn’t come with any more information than Everlywell, so I’m not sure the extra $30 is truly justified.
There are also more expensive bundle kits ranging up to $499 for the couples box. While it sounds very pricey, it does include screening for two people and eight STDs each.
STDcheck.com and PrioritySTD are also similarly priced, around $70 for an individual syphilis kit. With that, you get same-day testing in a secure lab, so you might not mind paying the slightly more expensive fee.
What’s the Best Home Syphilis Test?
The best overall option is LetsGetChecked. It offers high-value bundle options that screen for other STDs alongside syphilis, plus you get a free one-on-one consultation with a nurse to discuss your results.
For a cheap, individual syphilis test, I’d recommend Everlywell. It’s also a good option for ongoing testing, since you can sign up for the monthly subscription service and knock money off the price of your kit.
Or, you might go for myLAB Box if you and your partner want to screen your sexual health at the same time. The couple’s box is a great option for comprehensive STD screening in one.
I’d recommend STDcheck.com if you’re after urgent testing, because you can get screened on the same day you buy your kit. Although it’s in a lab, it’s still very discreet and results are ready in a day.

Best Home Syphilis Tests in 2021
How much is a syphilis at-home test?
That varies depending on whether you choose an individual kit or a bundle option. Typically, individual tests for syphilis cost around $49, with the cheapest option being from Everlywell.
Bundle options are a bit more, usually around $100-$200. LetsGetsGetChecked offers a 5-panel STD kit for $149 that screens for syphilis as well as chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and HIV.
How long do results take for an at-home syphilis test?
Results usually only take a couple of days. Some kits offer results in as little as 24 hours and same-day testing, so you can get your results even sooner. This is typically only for tests that offer in-lab testing and not at-home options, though.
Does insurance cover at-home syphilis testing?
Not always, but it’s worth checking with your insurance provider first. You can usually pay with HSA and FSA cards though, so you can save some money that way.
Some kits such as Nurx accept insurance and will bill them directly for you after you’ve paid an upfront cost.
How long should I wait before taking an at-home syphilis test?
Every STD has an incubation period, so you usually have to wait a few weeks after being exposed to the virus before you get tested. Otherwise, it’s unlikely it will be detected in your blood.
For syphilis, you should wait 3-6 weeks after exposure before taking your test. Always check your test first, though, because some kits offer early syphilis screening so you can get tested almost immediately.
